Obituary for Stephen Kearney

Stephen Russell Kearney, 78, died Thursday, May 18, 2017, at York Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Norma Jean (Rosier) Kearney, with whom he celebrated 55 years of marriage on February 24, 2017.

There will be a viewing on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, with a Masonic service beginning at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will begin on Wednesday, May 24, at 11 a.m. at the Mortuary with Rev. Dr. Peggy Click officiating. Interment will follow in New Freedom Cemetery.

Steve was a retired Captain with the Baltimore County Fire Department, retiring 25 years ago after 30 years of service. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-1960. He was a Past Master of Charity Lodge No. 134, A.F. & A.M., Freeland, MD, Past Patron of Parkton OES No. 42, a member of the Baltimore Co. Firefighters & Fire Officers Retirees Assoc., Pine Grove U.M. Church, and Bon Air Country Club. Steve said, “I enjoyed playing golf after retirement until the debilitating disease made me stop.”

Surviving, in addition to his wife, is his daughter, Denise Butcher and her husband, Kim of New Freedom; two granddaughters, Lauren Womack, and her husband, Rodney of New Freedom, and Leslie Butcher of Boca Raton, FL; two great - granddaughters, Mackenzie and Natalie Womack; a brother, Michael J. Kearney, and his wife, Beverly of New Freedom; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made in Steve’s memory to Pine Grove U.M. Church, 19401 Middletown Road, Parkton, MD 21120.
