Althea M. Phillips

Althea M Phillips, 84, of New Freedom, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2023. She was born on May 13, 1939 in Bluff City, Tennessee to the late John Gray and Delia (Lingerfelt). Being the oldest of five children, Althea is survived by her sister Linda Strayer and brothers, Steve Gray and Louis Gray. She is preceded in death by her sister Lillian Martin.

Althea had three loving children, Randy Phillips, Michael Phillips and Denise Phillips. She was adored by her seven grandchildren, Abby Noel, Kelly True, Sara Clark, Lacy Coates, Amanda Herbert, Chelsea Hunt and Jason Herbert. Eleven great-grandchildren were lucky enough to call her “Grandma Fi”.

She was devoted to her sons at Hammonds Body Shop, managing the office, until retiring at age 80.

Althea, affectionately known as “Maw” by her grandchildren, was an avid dog lover. She also enjoyed duckpin bowling, playing cards, listening to bluegrass and spending time with loved ones.

She was a dedicated matriarch to her family and will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
