Betty Jane Mays, 94, passed from this life on Friday, June 21, 2024. She was the loving wife of the late John J. Mays who passed in December of 1985. Born at home in Baltimore County, MD, she was the daughter of the late Harvey L. and Clara (Brenneman) Hoffman. Betty had been employed at the Charles G. Summers Jr. Canning Factory in New Freedom, and later at Black & Decker in Hampstead. After 19 years with Black & Decker, she retired in 1987. She came out of retirement in 2000 to be a greeter at Walmart in Hampstead. She was a member of Mt. Carmel U.M. Church in Parkton, MD, where she was also a communion steward and on the church worship committee. An avid bowler, Betty lived in Manchester, MD, and later in Hampstead, MD.
Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Faelten of Balt., MD, and Wendy Hanna and her husband, Greg of Kailua, Hawaii; Gary Eagan, son-in-law; 3 grandchildren, Jason Clift (Joy), John Eagan (Sarah), and Gabrielle Collins (Robert); 9 great grandchildren, Prater, Dalen, and Madeline Clift, Annabelle, Payton, and Walker Collins and Brooklyn, Tessa, and Caleb Eagan; a sister, Shirley Kohler, and a sister-in-law, Kathy Hoffman, as well as many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband John, a daughter, Diana Eagan, and 6 siblings, Jeanette Adams, Harvey ‘Tim’ Hoffman, Paul "Pete" Hoffman, Carroll Hoffman, Gilbert Hoffman (baby), and a sister who died soon after childbirth.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service honoring Betty’s life at 10 a.m. Monday, July 1, at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. 2nd St., New Freedom, PA 17349.
