Carl Lewis Matthews

Carl Lewis Matthews, age 85, passed away on May 23rd, 2022 in Harrisburg, PA. Carl was born in Freeland, MD on October 5, 1936 to the late Allen and Myrtle Matthews. Carl was the loving husband of Irene Matthews, to whom he would have celebrated 67 years of marriage this June. Carl was a supervisor of heavy equipment in the construction industry, retiring from Harry T. Campbell Company in 1999 after 45 years of service.Carl was a member of Charlton United Methodist Church in Harrisburg, PA, where he faithfully served the Lord. Carl was an avid trap shooter and enjoyed this sport with his sons. He loved wood working, miniature golf, and taking vacations with his family.He even flew in his later years for the first time, to visit his son, Russ in Florida. Carl is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Matthews; four loving children, Joseph Matthews (Marianne) of Harrisburg, PA, Russell Matthews ( Nancy) of Winter Springs, FL,Barbara Snow (Michael) of Shrewsbury, and Wayne Matthews (Megan) of Pasadena, MD; Four grandchildren, Mandy, Geoffrey, Stephanie and Jennifer; and 9 great-grandchildren, Burgandy, Corrine, Shawn, Colyn, Shayanne, Shayne, Shelton, Kennedy, and Ellie; and one dear sister, Margaret Stiffler of Stewartstown, PA.Carl was preceded in death by his brothers,Allen W. and Edgar F. Matthews and his 2 year old sister, Doris Matthews. A public viewing will be held on Friday, May 27th, from 6:00- 8:00 pm at Hartenstein Funeral and Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, PA 17349. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 28th at the funeral home, beginning at 11:00 am.Interment will immediately follow in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Cemetery, 20901 Mt. Zion Rd., Freeland, MD 21053.
