Corinne I. Sommer (Mayer)

Corinne Irene Sommer, 91, died Saturday, March 12, 2016, at SpiriTrust Lutheran, Shrewsbury. She was the wife of John M. Sommer, Jr., who died in 2001. A visitation will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A memorial service will follow later that Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 19200 York Road, Parkton, Md., 21120 with The Rev. William Alford officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Born October 2, 1924, in Woonsocket, R.I., Corinne was the daughter of the late Oscar Leo Mayer, Sr., and Lena (Lepine) Mayer. She was a home nurse for over 20 years in Northern Baltimore County, later working at Bonnie Blink Masonic Home in Hunt Valley, Md. Corinne was a long-time member of St. James Episcopal Church, Parkton, and was a former Vestry member and "queen of the kitchen" for 40 years. She was active in mission outreach volunteering and the Altar Guild for 50 years. Corinne was a foster mother for 17 babies. Surviving are one daughter, Judy M. Crouse and husband, Jeff; one son, Oscar L. Sommer and wife, Joanne; and three half-sisters, June L. Everton and husband, Ron, April R. Perkoski and husband, John, and May H. Courbron. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith E. Sommer; her stepson, John R. Sommer; her stepmother, Ada M. Mayer; four brothers, Robert A., Raymond A., Louis P. and Oscar L. Mayer, Jr.; and one sister, Clara Kilby. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Corinne's memory to St. James Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 420, Parkton, MD 21120.
