Doris Florence (Gross) McElwain, 94, died Friday, December 30, 2016, at SpiriTrust Lutheran, Shrewsbury. She was the wife of Gerald Allen McElwain, who died on May 18, 2010. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Centre Presbyterian Church, 83 New Park Rd., New Park, with her pastor, Rev. James L. Biller officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc. of Stewartstown is assisting the family. Doris was born February 6, 1922, on the family farm near Jarrettsville, Harford County, Md., a daughter of the late William S. and Florence B. (Street) Gross. She graduated from Jarrettsville High School and later graduated from Salisbury State Teachers College. She then taught in Harford County. Doris was a member of both the Maryland and Harford County Retired Teachers Associations. She was a member of Centre Presbyterian Church in New Park, where she taught Sunday school and sang in its choir. Doris is survived by a son, Allen S. McElwain and his wife, Margaret (Peggy); a daughter, Carol McElwain Strout and her husband, Wayne; five grandsons, Scott A. Sebring, Warren E. Sebring and his wife, Nicole, Jeffery A. Sebring and his wife, Jackie, Allen S. McElwain, Jr. and his partner, Elizabeth Adams, and Benjamin B. McElwain and his wife, Dianna; 11 great-grandchildren, Blake Sebring, Brian Sebring, Josh McElwain, Nathan McElwain, Lindsey Sebring, Ashley McElwain, Brooke McElwain, Greg Sebring, Zachary McElwain, Daphne Sebring, A.J. Adams and Drew Sebring. Doris was preceded in death by two sisters, Katheryn G. Hurley and Edith S. McElwain.
