Dorothy S. Sweitzer

Dorothy S. Sweitzer, a former resident of Stewartstown, died at Pleasant Acres Nursing & Rehabilitation Center on November 6, 2018. She was born June 7, 1921, daughter of the late Ralph E. and Ethel M. (Henry) Trout in Cross Roads, PA. She was a graduate of Stewartstown High School, Class of 1938 and completed work to receive her license in cosmetology at Empire School of Cosmetology in 1940. She and her sister-in-law, Janelle McDowell, operated a beauty salon in Stewartstown in the late 1940’s and 50’s. In 1966 she went to work with Key Plastics in Winterstown, retiring in 1986. She was married on Nov. 15, 1941 to Maynard (Mac) McDowell and he preceded her in death on Nov. 17, 1969. She married Dean Sweitzer on August 26, 1989, and he preceded her in death in 1995. She is survived by her son, Eugene McDowell of Seneca, PA and a daughter Pamela Fleshman (husband Kerry) of Lewisburg, WV. Survivors also include four grandchildren: Colonel Todd McDowell (wife Angela) of Stafford, VA, Jeffrey McDowell (wife Kim) of Belle Vernon, PA, Christian Ward (wife Wendy) of Hickory, NC, and Melanie Zopp (husband Bill) of Lewisburg, WV. Great grandchildren include Andrew, Emily, and Susanna McDowell of Stafford, VA, Jordyn and Olivia McDowell of Belle Vernon, PA, Audrey, Jared, and Riley Zopp of NC, and Ethan Garrett, of Hickory, NC.In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her brother, Donald, and her cousin, Basil, who was raised by her parents. Dorothy joined Round Hill Presbyterian Church when she was 12 years old on November 12, 1933, and was a lifelong member of that church. A person of strong Christian faith, she was active in Sunday School and Bible Studies. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 1PM from Round Hill Presbyterian Church, 7362 Church Road, Felton (Cross Roads), PA 17322 with Rev. Dr. David D. Feiser officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.A viewing will be held from 11AM until the time of her service at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Round Hill Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 126, Felton, PA 17322.
