George H.Wolf, 97, died Sunday, June 26, 2022, at his home.He was the husband of the late Hazel A. (Anderson) Wolf, whom he married on January 22, 1943 in Norrisville, MD., and with whom he celebrated 70 years of matrimony before her death in 2013.There will be a visitation from 10:00 to 11:30 AM Saturday July 9, at the Stewartstown United Methodist Church, 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown.The service will begin at 11:30 at the church, with the Rev. Dr. Keith Braucher and the Rev. Dr. G. Edwin Zeiders officiating, and will be followed by a luncheon reception at the Eureka Fire Company social hall, 82 N. Main St., Stewartstown.Arrangements are by the Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc. of Stewartstown. George was born the youngest of nine children on May 28, 1925 in North Hopewell Twp, York Co.His father was the late Alfred Daniel Wolf and his mother was the late Bessie May Mann.He attended a country school on Hain Rd. through the 8th grade, whereupon his father encouraged him to stay home and help tend the farm, as the closest high school was a 6-mile walk. George became a soldier in the U.S. Army in 1944 and fought in the Allied Rhineland Campaign of WWII during the winter of 1944/45.The Allies captured the Ludendorff Bridge over the Rhine, and were able to hold it, against German opposition, allowing the American and Belgian troops to advance into the German heartland.It was a battle resulting in almost a thousand Allied casualties including Private Wolf, who received a serious shrapnel wound to the head while helping to secure a village.He was rescued by medics and transported to a hospital in France for a month-long recuperation before being sent back to Germany to guard Allied supply trains. Returning stateside in 1946, George became a life-long farmer andmember of the York County and PA Farmers’ Associations, earning a PA Master Farmer Award in 1972.He enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors for the PA Potato Growers Association, the York Farm Credit, and the York County region of Hamilton Bank.George was active in the Stewartstown Lions Club for 56 years, serving 2 terms as President and earning the Melvin Jones Fellowship.He was a member of the Stewartstown United Methodist Church for over 75 years, serving as a Trustee and earlier as a Youth Sunday School teacher.In 1981 he co-chaired the fund-raising campaign for the new Eureka Volunteer Fire Company Station in Stewartstown. George enjoyed golf and bowling, but his real passion was long road trips across the beautiful U.S.of A.Hazel and he managed to visit all 50 states, returning with knowledge, memories, and appreciation of each.Their travels included many European countries as well. George and Hazel leave six children:James R. Wolf (recently deceased) and his wife Linda; J. Daniel Wolf and his wife Connie; David L. Wolf and his wife Judy; Stephen L. Wolf and his wife Robin; Susan K. Herbert and her husband William; and Virginia L. Babcock and her husband Randy, all of Stewartstown.They leave 14 grandchildren: Christopher Wolf and his wife Connie; Kerri Momberger and her husband Paul; Jason Wolf and his wife Kari; Justin Wolf and his wife Katya; Stephanie Reel and her husband David; Shannon Wolf and his wife Shannon; Stephen Wolf Jr. and his wife Lisa; Timothy Wolf and his wife Jamie; Nathan Herbert and his wife Megan; Patrick Herbert and his wife Holly; Brett Herbert and his wife Ashley; Emily Petrus and her husband Ionel; Dale Babcock and his wife Julie; and Ava Elicker and her husband Todd. They leave 25 great-grandchildren, and one precious great-great granddaughter.George was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters, all of southern York county. He leaves his companion Virginia Davis of Stewartstown to survive him.
