March 25, 1934 — November 24, 2021

Gladys L. (Kern) Markey, 87, of York, gently passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 24, 2021. Born in York Township on March 25, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Aaron D. and Anna L. (Markey) Kern. She was the loving wife of the late Richard K. Markey, who passed away on November 16, 2021. They were married on October 28, 1951 and were blessed to recently celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. Gladys is survived by her four children, Joyce McWilliams and her husband, Jay of Windsor, Jane Markey of York, Jill Chronister and her husband, John of York, and Jack Markey of Seven Valleys; 6 grandsons; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Kern and his wife, Sandra and Merle Kern and his wife, Maryanne; and two half-sisters, Judy Kurtz and Patsy Kern. She was preceded in death by her brother, Ralph E. Kern, Sr. Gladys was a long-time member of New Fairview Church of the Brethren and worked in the Leaders Heights Elementary cafeteria (Dallastown District) for 7 years. She especially loved working at market. Gladys started working at market at age 9 and was still working there even a few weeks before she passed away. She worked for Miller’s Meats, JL Miller Sons in Eastern Market on Fridays and at their Central Market stand on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Saturdays she also worked at Central Market for Dennis Fitz Home Grown Fruits & Vegetables. She was well known around the market community and will be missed greatly by those who worked with her as well as her loyal customers. Gladys had an unconditional love for her family and proudly spoke about them any chance she had. She was extremely generous and servant hearted, making sure they had everything they needed in addition to constant kind gestures such as bags of candy for the kids. She particularly enjoyed hosting the entire family and cooking a huge meal for holidays. Any visitor to her house could count on a piece of homemade cake or other delicious desert. She had an infectious laugh and always had words of encouragement, a hug to give, and a warm smile to share. Gladys will be remembered for the ways she demonstrated her love of God by encouraging, serving, and loving others. Her legacy as a devoted, caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother is a testament to her relationship with Jesus. Her nurturing love will live on in the hearts of her family and the many others whose lives she touched.
