Harold Lewis Gibson, a beloved father, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on January 22nd, 2025. Born in Monongahela, PA, on November 12, 1927, Harold lived a full and meaningful life.
Harold moved with his family to the Baltimore area in 1939 when he was 12 years old. He lived, worked, and raised a family at various locations there until he moved to York County PA in the 1980’s. In the final 2 years of his life, he lived with his family in Berlin, MD.
Harold was a proud US Navy veteran of World War II. After his service, he had a diverse career. He worked as a technician at Western Electric, assembly person at General Motors Fisher Body, milkman for Kress and Sealtest Dairies, a route salesperson for Delvale Ice Cream and Herr's Potato Chips, and finally as a part-time postmaster in retirement.
Harold loved to sing in church as part of his church choirs and, for 10 years in the 1940s-1950s, was a member of a traveling quartet that sang in various churches in the mid-Atlantic area. He often characterized singing in the quartet as the most enjoyable time of his life. In his younger years, he participated in bowling and adult softball leagues and enjoyed many other outdoor activities. He was a lifelong fan of the Baltimore Orioles all the way back to the minor league Orioles of the 1940’s. Even in the Orioles’ down years, he watched or listened to as many games as possible.
Harold is survived by his children: Peggy Bailey and her husband Peter Bailey of Marshfield Hills, MA; Linda Gibson of Brockton, MA; Wayne Gibson and his wife Frances Gibson of Mount Airy, MD; and David Gibson and his wife Gretchen Gibson of Brooklyn Park, MD. He is also survived by his stepdaughter: Ruth Ann Leubecker and her husband Charles Leubecker of Fawn Grove, PA. Harold was a proud grandfather to four grandchildren and a great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Harold was tough and independent. He survived three cancers and several other major health issues but remained vital right up to the last few weeks of his life. He was preceded in death by his wives, Dolores Mae Gibson, and Virginia Lee Gibson, as well as his sisters, Hazel Hance and Geraldine Bailey.
Harold was a member of the Fawn Grove Church of the Nazarene.
Services will be held at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc. with interment at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens in York, PA.
