Hazel W. Keeney

Hazel W. Keeney of Shrewsbury, age 99, died peacefully June 21,2021 at Pappus House, York, PA.She was the beloved wife of Thurlow Z. Keeney, who died July 10, 2006. Born September 10, 1921 in Rayville, MD, she was a daughter of the late Mary and Frank Wilson.June 14, 1941 she and Thurlow were married and she began her training in Baltimore as a beautician.Upon her husband’s return from the war inEurope in 1945 the couple settled in Stewartstown, PA. For 65 years she owned and operated Hazel Keeney’s Beauty Shop in her home.She closed her shop at the age of 82 and Hazel and Thurlow relocated to Shrewsbury. Their happy marriage spanned 65 years.Together they worked hard, hosted countless banquets for family, and traveled extensively.Their travels took them throughout the US, Europe and as far as Australia and Tahiti. Hazel belonged to the Stewartstown United Methodist Church.She loved playing cards with friends.She was most content when her hands were busy doing the job she loved,making her legendary pies or quilting her newest creation. Hazel is survived by daughter Joan Fulton and her husband Tim of York; one grandchild Ian Fulton, his wife Kirsi and daughter Elisa Hazel of CA; and one sister Ethel Bennett of Jacksonville, MD.She was preceded in death by 6 sisters and one brother. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 23, 2021 from 10:00 – 11:00 am at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc.; 24 N. Second St. New Freedom, PA. A Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 am on Friday at the funeral home. Interment in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery with follow the service.
