Hazel L. Markey

On Wednesday June 28th, Hazel L. Markey (Sheffer) of York entered eternal rest at the age of 97. She was the beloved wife of the late Edmund D. Markey, with whom she shared 65 beautiful years of marriage until his passing in 2018. Born in Shrewsbury (Hungerford) on December 7th, 1925, to the late Albert and Ethel Sheffer (Fry), she brought joy and warmth to her family and community throughout her lifetime. Hazel worked at South Pine Nightwear, Lehman's Roadside stand, and, until 2014, Hartman's Bakery, where every Friday, she could be seen at The Eastern Market. Together with her husband, Hazel was a dedicated member of both St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church and The Red Lion Grange #1781. Hazel enjoyed spending time with her family and always making them laugh. She enjoyed traveling together, playing miniature golf, and collecting antique cut glass. She is survived by her sisters Brenda Coulter and her husband, John of Shrewsbury, and Ruth Ann Slenker of York. In addition, she is survived by 16 nieces and nephews and countless great-nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents and five siblings: Deula, Calvin, Edward, Obed, and John. She had a cherished relationship with her sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and John, nephew Nathan Coulter, niece Virginia Druck and husband Todd and sons Brandon and Tyler Druck, and niece Lisa Baile and husband Christopher and daughters Abigail and Olivia Herbert. Public viewing will be on Monday, July 3, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until a funeral service that will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Hartenstein Funeral and Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. Interment will follow in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, York. Rev. Patricia A. Snyder will officiate. Instead of flowers, the family kindly suggests donating in Hazel's memory to The Red Lion Grange #1781, 59 Second St. Windsor, PA 17366, or to The Olivia's House, 830 S. George St. York, PA 17403.
