Hilda L. Gemmill (Grove)

Hilda L. Gemmill, 95, of York, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Senior Commons at Powder Mill. Born in Laurel, PA, she was the daughter of the late Roy C. Grove, Sr. and Annie E. (Hall) Grove. She and her late husband, John T. Gemmill, had resided previously on a farm near High Rock. Hilda was a seamstress for the former Stewartstown Manufacturing Co., worked at a cigar company in Brogue, and was a bookkeeper for her late husband’s plastering business. She was an active member of Round Hill Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Cross Roads, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Red Lion V.F.W. Post 1446, and the Stewartstown American Legion Auxiliary Post 455. Hilda was co-founder of the James Franklin Grove Family Reunion, which has been meeting annually since 1959. She was a committeewoman of the East Hopewell Election Board. She enjoyed being a member of the Fox Hunters Association in Fawn Grove and the York County Fiddlers Association’s Ladies Auxiliary. She also loved gardening, sewing, making crafts, playing cards, traveling, and fishing and hunting with her family. She is survived by her two sons: Perry Gemmill and his wife, Kay of Manheim, Wayne T. Gemmill and his wife, Christine of Airville; two daughters: Vera Haugh and her companion Terrie D. Robinson of Brogue, Dorcas Ruff and her husband Austin [Lee] of Stewartstown; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; two brothers: Howard Grove and his wife, Catherine of Brogue, Earl Grove of Red Lion; a sister, Charlotte Warner and her husband Robert of Red Lion; and two sisters-in-law: Norma Jean Groveand June Brown both of Red Lion. In addition to her parents and husband, Hilda was preceded in death by four siblings, Roy Grove, Jr., Ruth Grove, Mabel Thompson, and Richard Grove. There will be a viewing from 10:00-11:00 am on Monday, October 2, 2017, at Round Hill Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 7362 Church Rd, Felton, PA. The funeral service will be on Monday at 11:00 am with Rev. Dr. David D. Feiser officiating. Interment will follow at Round Hill Cemetery. Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 19 S. Main St., Stewartstown is assisting the family. Appreciation is expressed to the staff at Senior Commons and Caring Hospice Services.
