John Robert Sheffer

John R. Sheffer, 86, of Hanover passed away on June 8th at John Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. He was the son of the late Albert E. and Ethel V.(Fry) Sheffer. He was born in Hungerford, Pennsylvania and was the 6th child out of 8 and the 4th boy. Growing up John loved playing baseball, singing with his grandfather and in Church Choir, helping out on the family farm and spending time with family and friends. John was a graduate of Susquehannock High School class of 1954 and after graduation he was drafted into the Army where he proudly served for a few years stateside. John worked many jobs including being a printer for duplex paper, and a farmhand for Bob Ilyes’s Farm. John loved Eagles and spent a lot of time at Codorus State Park watching the nest and the Eagles hatching; he also loved cars, learning about them and watching them race. He was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens and rarely missed watching a game on TV. John loved his family and spending time with all his brothers and sisters and their families. John is preceded in death his parents Albert and Ethel; brothers Edward, Calvin and Obed Sheffer, foster brother Wilmer Taylor and sister Deula (Coulston). He is survived by his 3 sisters, Hazel Markey of Airville, Ruth Ann Slenker and her husband Eddie, Brenda Coulter and her husband John; daughter Wendy Calaman and her husband Mike, Foster daughter Frances Field; grandson Austin Calaman; and many nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces. There will be a viewing from 9-10 AM on Wednesday June 17th at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc. 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, PA. A funeral service will start at 10 AM with Rev. Kevin T. Shively officiating, with interment to follow at Christ Lutheran Cemetery in Shrewsbury.
