John H. Slater

John (Jack) H. Slater passed away on Wed., January 19, 2022. He was the loving husband of 57 years to Joan (Freeman) Slater. He was born on April 20, 1937 in Altoona, PA to the late John Paul and Clara (Ivory) Slater. Jack was a parishioner at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Baltimore, MD and St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church.Jack was a United States Army Veteran. Along with his wife, Joan, he is survived by his three children, John P. Slater and wife, Veronique, Jean Gelhaus and Janice McLain and husband, Ronald; ten grandchildren Wendy Gehaus and fiancée, Michael Davis, John B. Gelhaus, Anna McLain and fiancée, Jan Horvat, Cara, Olivia, Patrick, Jacob, Bernadette, Gabriel, and Genevieve McLain; great -granddaughter, Braelynn Davis and sister, Elizabeth Sibol. Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Baran and brothers, Thomas and Daniel Slater. A public viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, January 23rd, at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, PA 17349. Jack’s family has requested those wishing to attend please wear a mask and social distance as appropriate. A funeral liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 24th at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom, PA 17349. Interment will immediately follow at the church cemetery with a flag folding ceremony provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory to: St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at the above address.
