Joseph Samuel Herbert

Joseph Samuel Herbert, 74, of New Freedom, passed away Monday, March 4, 2024. He was the loving husband of Tammy S. (Ferree) Herbert, together they shared 23 years of marriage. Joseph was born on February 20, 1950 in York and was the son of Sarah Catherine “Cacky” (Smithson) Herbert and the late Samuel Wilson Herbert.

In addition to his mother and wife, Joe is survived by his three children Kelly Silk, Patti Cohn and her husband Doug, Steven Herbert and his wife Lori and five grandchildren; Abby, Olivia, Carli, Shane and Christopher. Joe was preceded in death by his father in 2018 and a son Joseph “Little Joe” Herbert, Jr. in 1969.

Joe worked as a truck driver with UPS, Consolidated Freightways, Harley-Davidson & McCrory’s for 18 years. Joe was the owner of Joseph S. Herbert Grounds Maintenance, serving York County for 35 years. He was a member of Charity #134 Grand Lodge in Freeland, MD, Parkton American Legion Post 256, Viking Athletic Association and the Hanover Moose. He also enjoyed watching sprint car and Nascar racing.

There will be a viewing on Friday, March 8th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, PA 17349. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 9th at 11:00 a.m. at New Hope (Fissel’s) United Church of Christ, 3426 Fissel’s Church Rd., Glen Rock, PA 17327 with a viewing prior from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at the adjoining church cemetery in Glen Rock.
