Joseph R. Patterson

Joseph Ross Patterson, 90, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024. He was the loving husband of the late Joan (Ramsey) Patterson and together they shared over 66 years of marriage before her passing in 2022. Born in Oakland, MD, Joseph was the son of the late Rev. Winfield S. and Neva (Triplett) Patterson.

Joseph graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1955 and then served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958. He had a career in consumer finance in Baltimore, MD, for 30 years. He was a devoted Christian, husband, father, and grandfather. Joseph was an excellent handyman, enjoyed carpentry, building and house renovation projects, and gardening. After retirement, he traveled through the Northeast U.S. singing with the Barnstormers, a men’s choir. He loved animals, especially his cat Beau, who was his faithful companion for the last several years.

Surviving are two daughters, Carol Shirvinsky and husband, John, and Linda Renick and husband, Bill; three grandchildren, Bronwyn Edwards, Colin Renick and wife, Paula, and Amy Cain and husband, Ryan; and a great grandchild, Isabel Renick. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Joan Schenck.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to a viewing from 1-2 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, from Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. 2nd St., New Freedom, PA 17349 with a service beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Parkton, MD.
