Louis Frederick ‘Fred’ Stiffler Jr., of Hereford, passed from this life on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, after a long illness with corticobasal degeneration (CBD). He was the devoted husband of Bonnie H (Bathgate) Stiffler and they celebrated 44 years of marriage in 2022. Born in York, he was the son of the late Louis Frederick and Ruby (Propst) Stiffler. A man of few words but many great acts, Fred will be remembered by all who knew him for his commitment to service and his great love for his family.
Fred followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the Hereford Volunteer Fire Company in 1970, where he was a Life Member and served in a number of roles, including Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain, First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant, Engineer, and the Board of Directors. In 2012, he was elected to the Baltimore County Volunteer Firefighter’s Association Hall of Fame. He worked for the Baltimore County Fire Department for 31 years, retiring in 2010 at the rank of Lieutenant. In addition, Fred was a Master Electrician and ran a successful electrical business, Stiffler Electric, for many years.
Fred enjoyed a number of hobbies, including gardening, antiquing, and going for long rides with Bonnie in his beloved ’57 Chevy Bel Air. In his retirement, he especially enjoyed being outdoors and working in his barn. He loved to spend time with his family and was delighted to become a grandfather.
Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Regina Stiffler of Hereford, MD, Adriene Delozier and her spouse, Jason of Glenville, PA, and Louis Stiffler III and his spouse, Debbie of Parkton, MD; two grandchildren, Mackenzie Delozier and Alice Stiffler; and three sisters, Gail Oleyar and her spouse, Ron, of VA, Brenda Lee Copenhaver of Hereford, MD, and Robin Stiffler of Parkville, MD. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Joyce Humphrey and Brenda Ruth.
