Madeline Walker (Crouse)

Madeline Walker, 89, died Monday, December 12, 2016 at her home. She was the wife of the late Russell S. Walker, Sr. Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, December 15 at the J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Bethlehem Steltz Reformed Church, 5890 Steltz Rd., Glen Rock. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Born April 2, 1927, in Renick, WV, Madeline was the daughter of the late Albert H. and Flossie Ann (Lewis) Crouse. She was a member of Bethlehem Steltz Reformed Church for over 70 years and had served as President of the Ladies Sunday School Class #3. She also was a former Treasurer of the United Church Women and a member of the Altar Guild. She had been employed with the Stewartstown Manufacturing Co., formerly Greif Brothers, and the former Charles G. Summers, Jr., Inc. in New Freedom, where she met her late husband, Russell, whom she married on June 1, 1946. They celebrated 61 years of marriage at the time of his passing. Together they operated the family farm for 37 years. They also enjoyed being snowbirds, traveling to Florida during the winter months, and traveling to Wildwood, NJ to enjoy the beach during the summer. She loved time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Madeline is survived by two daughters, Linda Garrett and Debra Jones and a son, Russell S. Walker, Jr. and his wife Kathy, all of Glen Rock. Also her son-in-law, Byron Phelps of Joppatowne, MD; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Phelps; two sons-in-law, Joseph Wick (Joan) and Michael Jones (Debra); a granddaughter, Jeanne Wick; a great-granddaughter, Sara Wick; four brothers, George, Paul, Alvin and Junior Crouse and three sisters, Sally Morrison, Hattie Hammons and Edna Wieble. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethlehem Steltz Reformed Church, 5890 Steltz Rd., Glen Rock, PA 17327.
