Mary Alt, aged 80, passed away on December 5, 2023. She was born in Johnstown, PA, but set deep roots in southern York County, PA. Mary was a compassionate and kind-hearted woman who laughed easily and loved to share stories where the facts never got in the way. Mary dedicated her life to serving her family and community.
Mary graduated from Johnstown Central Catholic High School and received her teaching degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She worked as a middle school history teacher but fulfilled her passion for helping others as the executive director of Southern Community Services, a provider of compassionate care to seniors and low-income residents of southern York County.
Mary was a master gardener who found solace and joy in her garden. She loved to travel; Williamsburg, VA especially captured her heart. She enjoyed exploring new places, experiencing different cultures, and trying new restaurants. Her life was enriched by dear friends who will miss her presence on “girls' weekends” and around the lunch and card table.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, William Alt, and their children: June (Andrew), William (Angie), Eric (Jen), Annie, and Karl (Sarah), She is also survived by her nine grandchildren who she adored, always reveling in their accomplishments. Her sister Carolyn “Frankie” Havas also mourns her passing.
