Mary Ellen Deavers, 95, passed away on December 31, 2023. Born in York, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Lillian L. (Snellbecker) Erney. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leonard M. Deavers.
Mary Ellen graduated from William Penn Senior High School in 1947. After graduation, she attended the York Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated from in 1950. She later worked there as an instructor. She was employed at York Hospital as a RN for most of her career. Mary Ellen devoted her life to working in the health care field in various roles. She was active with the Girl Scouts where she taught first aid to them in both the US and Europe. She worked as a hospice nurse for about 5 years and she was a nurse coordinator for the civil defense where she taught disaster training. Mary Ellen also had worked at SpiriTrust Lutheran in Shrewsbury.
Mary Ellen was also very active in her churches. She was a Sunday school teacher at the former Bethany UCC and the Stewartstown United Methodist Church. She was active in the Caring Ministry at SUMC. Mary Ellen also volunteered her time at the Stewartstown Senior Center where she taught ceramics.
She is survived by a daughter, Marie Hyson and her husband, Todd of Red Lion; 2 granddaughters, Samantha Roedts and her husband, lan of York and Heather Bartsch and her husband, Matthew of Earlville, MD; and four great grandchildren, Cirilla and Elarra Roedts, and Cayman and Coburn Bartsch;
and a sister, Ruth P. Frey of York. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Raymond, Stewart, Robert, Raymond, Dale Erney, and step brother, Chester Erney, and sister, Doris Erney Tredway.
There will be a public viewing at the Stewartstown United Methodist Church, 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown, PA, 17363 on Friday, January 5, from 9-11 am, followed by a church service at 11 a.m. There will be a graveside service at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens, 250 Chestnut Hill Rd., York, PA, 17402 at 2:00 pm. on Friday.
