Mary M. (McGowan) Grant, 72, of Dover, passed away quietly on Saturday, November 20, 2021. She was the loving wife of Gary A. Grant to whom she was married 29 years. Born in Summit, New Jersey, she was a daughter of the late William and Margaret (Shea) McGowan. Mary received her Masters of Psychiatric Nursing degree from New York University. Over 38 years, she worked as a Psychiatric Clinical Specialist and RN at Overlook Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, East Orange VA Hospital, Lyons VA Medical Center, VA Hospital of Huntington, WV, VA Hospital of Baltimore MD and VA Hospital of Perry Point MD; retiring on March 31st. Mary was an avid reader and an accomplished Ballroom Dancer at the Regal Dance Club; where she enjoyed learning many styles of dance alongside her husband. Mary had a heart of gold and was faithful to serving her community with various charity participation. She loved to volunteer with the American Society of Alzheimer’s Disease, Lord’s Lunch, Feeding America, and Health Ministry.Mary served as a Matter of Balance Program Teacher and Southern York County Pantry Leader. She also was a devoted member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. In addition to her husband Gary, she is survived by two children, Sean Poole and his wife, Erin and Heather Machado and her husband, Roman; three grandchildren, Clay Poole, Maya Machado and Elias Machado; and two brothers, Dennis and Michael McGowan. She was preceded in death by her three siblings, Alford McGowan, Virginia Sain and John McGowan. A Funeral Liturgy will be held Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 11:00 AM from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave. New Freedom, PA with Rev. Joshua Cavender as Celebrant. Interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. Services are entrusted to Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc. 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to: The Alzheimer’s Association; 2595 Interstate Dr. Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110; The Lords Lunch; PO Box 25, New Freedom, PA 17349 and the Southern York County Pantry; 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom, PA 17349.
