Mary Ethel Hopkins, 86, of New Freedom passed away Saturday, January 25, 2025. She was the loving wife of the late Rev. Dr. Mark L. Hopkins, to whom she was married 63 years.
Born in Needmore, WV, she was the daughter of the late Darl and Ollie (Wilkins) Teets.
Mary began her journey in West Virginia. She was very close with her parents and enjoyed many outdoor activities with them.
Mary attended Wardensville High School in West Virginia. It wasn't long after that she met Mark. She spotted Mark outside of an ice cream stand. They married and were blessed with five children. Mary enjoyed cooking and raising her children. The church was a huge part of their life. She attended New Freedom Baptist Church, where her husband was the pastor for 50 years. The family often traveled to West Virginia, Maryland, Maine, South Dakota and Nebraska to visit their other family members. Mary's focus was being a supportive wife, loving mother, and ensuring her children received a quality education.
Mary loved to greet everyone with a warm smile and a compliment.
She is survived by four children, Deborah, wife of Rev. Tim Bullock, John Hopkins, Rev. Michael A. Hopkins and wife Shelly, and Elizabeth Choquette; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; sister Winnie Alexopoulos. Mary was preceded in death by a daughter, Rebekah Sue Phillips and two sisters Helen Harman and Betty Combs.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 9:00 AM at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 19 S. Main St., Stewartstown, PA 17363, with her son Rev. Michael A. Hopkins officiating. The burial will be private in WV with her son-in-law, Rev. Timothy Bullock officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to New Freedom Baptist Church, P.O. Box 157, New Freedom, PA 17349 in her memory.
