Michael R. "Dick" Caum

Michael R. "Dick" Caum, 73, died Friday, December 11, 2015, at Hospice & Community Care in Mt. Joy. He was the loving husband of Janet (Bollinger) Caum, whom he married July 15, 1967. A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. The funeral liturgy will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 18 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom. Interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. Born October 25, 1942, in Altoona, Dick was the son of the late Robert E. and Josephine (Adams) Caum. After proudly serving in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Alaska, Dick began his professional career as a police officer in Altoona and later as a telephone equipment installer for Western Electric. He was later employed at Lucent Technologies, Hunt Valley, before retiring and working for IBM in their data center. He was a part-time police officer for Shrewsbury and New Freedom from 1972-1979, and was elected Constable for Shrewsbury Boro, serving the community for 35 years. Dick was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Freedom, and owned his own model railroad business. Dick was also an avid hunter and conservationist who was involved with Penn State Forestry. He was a member of the Shrewsbury Fire Company in the 1970s. In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Jennifer (Ken) Mathias, and their children, Julia, Abby, and Paige of York; daughter, Stephanie (Todd) Knepper, and their children, Ben and Gracie of New Freedom; and son, Michael (Samantha) Caum, and their children, Michael and Natasha of Shrewsbury; siblings, Robert (Glenda) Caum of Georgia, Nancy Decker and Jim (Judy) Caum of Altoona; a cousin, Tom (Maryellen) Myers, who was like a brother, of New York. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Doris Yingling and Nancy Shunk, of Altoona. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dick's memory to Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125; or to The Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stewart Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714 (for pancreatic cancer research).
