Michael Derek Anthony Mackney, 81, of Shrewsbury and formerly of England, passed away Friday, December 13, 2024. He was the loving husband of the late Madge “Liz” Elizabeth (Lewry) Mackney with whom he shared 32 years of marriage.
Born in Wickham, England, to the late Eric Gordon and Sylvia May (Brackpool) Mackney.
Michael served in the British Royal Navy for 20 years as an officer. He held many titles as a chartered engineer, MPhil, PhD, CEng, MIMechE and worked as professor for the U.S. Naval Academy until his retirement. Michael appreciated learning and educating others, whether it was tutoring his grandchildren in their studies, volunteering at the AACA Museum in Hershey, or reading books. Michael also loved to travel over the years and most recently enjoyed spending time with his fellow “Bens Mens” church group, where they met weekly, every Thursday at Panera.
He is survived by his two daughters Kirsten Emma Rachel Martuszewski and Francesca Hannah Alice Frye and her husband Roy; five grandchildren Gabriella Elizabeth, Alexander Price, and Isabella Camille Martuszewski and Avery Claire and Owen Mitchell Frye; two sisters Diana Dodsley and Veronica Phillips and family. He will also be missed by his Weimaraner dog, Bolt who was his best friend.
Michael was preceded in death by his brother-in-law’s Cliff Dodsley and John Phillips.
A celebration of life service will be held at Grace Fellowship Church, 74 E. Forrest Ave, Shrewsbury at 6:00 p.m., Monday, December 16th.
