Mildred W. Shaffer, 103, of Shrewsbury died on June 23, 2023. She was the wife of the late Lester W. Shaffer. Born on April 2, 1920 at Osceola Mills to Alfred and Ruth Webster, she was a graduate of Osceola Mills High School and Thompson Business College of York. Her first job was as a secretary at the Valencia Ballroom in York during the big band era and she enjoyed sharing her book with photos of the noted band leaders who passed through their office. She later worked for the Sieling Furniture Company of Railroad and the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Fort Eustis, Virginia while her husband Les served there during World War II. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of State College for thirty years before the couple moved to the Shrewsbury Lutheran Retirement Village. In retirement, she was active at Grace United Methodist Church of Shrewsbury and as a volunteer for many organizations including the Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary and Lutheran Social Services. The door to her home was always open. She is survived by daughter Bonnie Shaffer Stevens (and husband Glenn) of New Oxford; son John Shaffer (and wife Barbara) of Shepherdstown, West Virginia; granddaughters Leslie Sheetz (and husband Jason), Laura Gyre (and husband James), Suzanne Shaffer (and husband Nat Meysenburg); and three great-grandchildren. She was blessed with many enduring friendships. Memorial contributions may be made to the SpiriTrust Lutheran Benevolent Care Fund, or to Grace United Methodist Church of Shrewsbury. A Graveside Service will be on Monday, July 10, 2023 beginning at 1:00pm at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Shrewsbury, PA, The Rev. Aaron Cope, officiating.
