Ora Cathern Boyer (Calhoun)

Ora Cathern Boyer, 96, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 17, 2016. She was the loving wife of the late Harold L. Boyer who died on June 16, 1976. Services and interment will be private and at the convenience of her family. J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Born June 14, 1920, in Atkins, VA, she was the daughter of the late Foy H. and Maggie (Snider) Calhoun. Ora was a member of the Hayshire U.C.C. in York. She retired in the early 1980's from the former York Suit and Dress Co. with over 20 years of service. During WWII, she was employed with Bendix Corp. in Towson, Md. as a "Rosie the Riveter" and was very proud of her job. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and traveling with her family. Surviving are two children, Ronald R. Boyer of York, and Carolyn L. Boyer Toomey and her husband, Dale of Dallastown; two grandchildren, Laura S. Whalen and her husband, Jon of Wilmington, DE, and Mitchell H. Boyer and his wife, Anjuli of Cincinnati, OH; three great-grandchildren, Josephine and Sarah Whalen, and Mark R. Boyer; and a sister, Helen Schlaline of York. Ora was preceded in death by siblings, Mae Fry and Gilbert Calhoun; and a daughter-in-law, Wendy E. (Smith) Boyer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ora's memory to Hayshire United Church of Christ, 100 Haybrook Drive, York, PA, 17406.
