Pauline Elizabeth Duncan Carico, 105, known affectionately as Aunt Polly, a lifelong resident of northern Harford County, MD passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 29, 2018.She was predeceased in 1974 by her husband of 37 years, Talmadge Carico, was the daughter of the late Hannah D. and Robert L. Duncan, and the middle sister of the late Everett N. and Robert R. (Roy) Duncan.Her grandfather, Andrew Duncan, was a sergeant in the Purnell Legion, Company A, Maryland Cavalry, and fought at Gettysburg in July 1863. Born on July 8, 1913, and raised on the family dairy farm off MD-136/Harkins Road/Island Branch Road east of Norrisville, she was a beloved teacher, role model, confidant and dear friend to generations of Harford County/southern York County, Pennsylvania residents throughout her 36 years of teaching and follow-on active retirement years.In some cases she taught whole families over her teaching career.She was a life-long and devoted member of Norrisville United Methodist Church, serving on many committees and famous for making her special “pecan tarts” for all occasions.She was a member of the Grange, Eastern Star, Madonna AARP, Delta Kappa Gamma Tau Chapter, The Jarrettsville Book Club, served the community through Meals on Wheels, and earned well deserved recognition as a Harford County Living Legend.She was also a founding member of the “Golden Girls” which included Marian Trout, Gwen Geer and Mildred Allen. Aunt Polly attended Carea School on Carea Road/Amos Mill Road during her elementary years beginning in 1919, graduated from Jarrettsville High School where she met Talmadge in 1931, attended Western Maryland College and received her teaching degree from Towson State Teachers College in 1935.After graduation she returned to Carea and taught all seven grades at the two-room school through 1950, and first grade at Highland Elementary School, Street, MD, for 21 years until her retirement in 1971 after nearly four decades of service in Harford County Public Schools. Following her marriage to Talmadge at her parents’ farm on August 13, 1937, she and Talmadge lived at the beautiful Carico family Guernsey dairy farm, known as Cariacres, on Carico Lane northeast of Shawsville until moving to another farm on Jolly Acres Road just south of Norrisville in 1960 where she lived for the remainder of her life. Aunt Polly is survived by nine nieces and nephews: Jack Wagoner and wife Dorothy of Sparta, NC, Cynthia Merryman Steuart and husband Calvert of Huntingtown, MD, Robert N. Duncan and wife Virginia of Arlington, VA, Carolyn D. Morris of Norrisville, MD, Everett A. “Butch” Duncan of Norrisville, Linda Duncan of Norrisville, Bette Ann Satchell and husband Randy of Cordova, MD, Rebecca Schilling of Fawn Grove, PA, and Nancy Morris and husband Lee of Fawn Grove, PA and was the loving aunt to twelve great-nieces and nephews in Maryland, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. She was preceded in death by Everett’s wife, Louise, Roy’s wife, Evelyn “Babe”, Carolyn’s husband, Donald and son Michael, Butch’s wife Alex and her niece, Susan Duncan Long and husband Melvin. Public viewing will be on Monday, September 3, 2018 from 10am until a funeral service begins at 12pm at Norrisville United Methodist Church, 2811 W. Church Lane, White Hall, MD 21161.Rev. Melissa A. McDade will officiate.Aunt Polly will be laid to rest in the church cemetery alongside Talmadge and among many other family and friends.
