Richard Lee Moats, 64, passed away in Harrisburg with family by his side on Tuesday, April 1, 2025. Born in York, Pa, he was the son to the late Melvin J. and Shirley A. (Walstrum) Moats. He was the loving husband to Diane A. (Mangan) Odoms. Rich was a strong, passionate, dedicated man. He was always reminiscing especially of his army days. He talked about his time in Europe, and specifically Germany. He recalled seeing the castles and buying an authentic cuckoo clock. Rich was heroic to serve his country. He was proud to be able to help provide for his family, and keep them safe. Rich also often recalled times of growing up and going down the street to a restaurant near his home. He said that he would always bring something special back just for his mom. He talked about raising his son, and making sure that his son always had meals and made it to practices on time. He laughed, recalling fun times they had together especially at dirt track races, and go-karting. He talked about meeting his wife, who was his best friend. How they would go to the same places growing up, but didn't finally meet until they both worked together. They moved together and spent every day making memories, and the most of their years together. They most recently moved back to PA, in support of Rich's son and his family. Rich loved spending time with family. Going out and driving around, looking at the markets, and finding new ingredients to make his delicious meals. Rich loved to cook but even more he loved to share a good meal with family and friends. Rich would make treats and desserts, and he always made enough to take and share with his neighbors. RIch also loved cornhole, especially that he got to enjoy it with his son, and his cornhole family. Rich could have a conversation with anyone, and would light up any room that he graced. Rich was the epitome of strength, love and family values. He was and continues to be a guiding light. He is survived by his wife, Diane; children, Josh and Crystal, Scott, Eugene and Tori; 5 grandchildren, Mackayla, Nick, Hailey, Elaine, and Liam; brother and sisters-in-law, Len and Debbie Bupp, and Denise Mangan; also Ryan and Logan whom he considered a part of the family. Rich was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Megan Moats, who passed in 2023. Family and friends are invited to a viewing on Monday, April 7, 2025, from 6-8 pm at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, PA 17349. Full Military Honors will be presented at 6:30 pm at the funeral home by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
