Salvatore A. “Reb” Scavone

Salvatore A. “Reb” Scavone of Freeland, MD, 88, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025.

Reb, a first generation Italian-American,  was born in Baltimore City, MD; a son of the late Giacomino Scavone and Catena Scavone née Guarino, who immigrated in the early 20th century from Villarosa, a village near Palermo, Sicily.

He was the loving husband of the late Beverly Ann Scavone née Jones, who preceded him in death in 2021. Together, they co-founded the Northern Baltimore County Historical Society over 25 years ago.

Reb was a United States Navy Veteran, serving as a “green shirt” on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CVA34) from 1959-1963. He was known as a “jack-of-all-trades” and has worked as a rigger, crane operator, mason, and general contractor. Since 1984 he was the proprietor of Middletown Repair Shoppe, a small engine repair and equipment sales company in Freeland, MD.

He was an avid Civil War and WWII history buff. Reb also enjoyed Civil War reenacting, primarily with cavalry groups. He also worked as an engineer on the historic Northern Central Railway and Stewartstown Railway. Most recently he was an engineer and docent with the Ma & Pa Railroad and Heritage Village in Muddy Creek Forks, PA. He was a member of the American Legion and was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, MD.

Reb will be missed by his two sons, Richard and William Scavone; five grandchildren, Lauren, Casey, Dylan, Lena, and Benjamin. He was preceded in death by his siblings.

There will be a public viewing on Friday, March 21st, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Hartenstein Funeral and Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, PA 17349.

A Funeral Liturgy will be on Saturday, March 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 18310 Middletown Rd., Parkton, MD 21120.  Interment will follow in Middletown Cemetery, Freeland, MD.
