On March 22, 2023, Steven Ray Saubel, 72, of Glen Rock, was ushered into Heaven by his late wife, Anna ‘Marie’ Saubel, just 3 months after her passing. Born in Hametown, Steve was the son of the late Leon C. and Doris A. (Diehl) Saubel, and a proud 1968 graduate of Susquehannock High School. After high school Steve attended Lebanon Valley College, continuing to work, as he had since his boyhood, at the family business, Saubel’s Markets. Popularly known as Saubel's, the market was started in the village of Hametown in 1926 by his grandfather, Claude, and was then run by Steve’s father, Leon.
Following in the family footsteps, Steve and his brother, Gregory, continued to run the family’s business together until Steve retired in July of 2006 to spend his free time with Marie who was the love of his life, and with whom he celebrated 40 years of marriage in June of 2022. Marie and Steve were avid Harley owners and could be seen enjoying weekend rides to their mountain home. When not working or spending time with Marie, Steve could be found in his woodshop working on baskets, train sets, and furniture. Steve also enjoyed the outdoors including hunting, archery, and biking, and he completed 8 marathons after the age of 50.
Steve was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s (Hametown) Lutheran Church; a member of the Shrewsbury Lodge No. 423 F&AM; the Harrisburg Consistory Scottish Rite; the Shriners Zembo Temple in Harrisburg; the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, York Forest # 30; the American Motorcycle Association; the Harley Owners Group; and a life member of the York County Ag Society.
Steve is survived by his brother, Gregory and his wife, Betti Saubel; nephews, Bobby Stiffler and Adam Saubel; niece, Kelsi Saubel; McKenzie and Tucker Clauss, his ‘grandchildren in all but name; and his dear friends, including Kerry and Theresa Clauss.
