Sylvia Anne Barto (Kugler)

On Friday, March 16, 2018, Sylvia Barto, 83, passed away in Virginia.She was born in 1934 to the late Lydia M. and Harry Kugler, Jr. Sylvia graduated from West York High School, then attended Elizabethtown College, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree.She then went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Education from Johns Hopkins University.Sylvia taught at Shrewsbury Elementary for four years, then taught at Bel Air High School in Harford County, MD and was an advisor for their Future Business Leaders of America program.She retired after 25 years of service and was the recipient of the distinguished Governor’s Citation for Outstanding service during her teaching career. Sylvia was a life member of Christ Lutheran Church in Shrewsbury where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was the President of the Church Council - she was the first female to hold that position in 175 years.Sylvia was a past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Triangle Chapter #483 in Shrewsbury; past Royal Matron of the Dr. J.M. Hyson Court Order of the Amaranth Chapter #106 in Red Lion; member of American Business Women’s Association-York Charter Chapter where she served as the corresponding secretary and treasurer and was elected “Woman of the Year”; charter member of the Shrewsbury Area Preservation Society; member of the ladies auxiliary of York Hospital, Shrewsbury Fire Co., and the Lutheran Retirement Village; she was also a tax preparer for H&R Block in Shrewsbury.When she had spare time, she enjoyed reading and gardening. Sylvia is survived by three children; 2 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister. A public viewing will be from 11:30am until a funeral service begins at 1:30pm on Sunday, March 25 at Hartenstein Funeral and Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom.Interment will follow in New Freedom Cemetery.Pastor Brian Biery will officiate. Donations in her memory may be made to the Christ Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, 105 S.
