Sylvia McGreal, 94 of York Township, Pennsylvania, a beacon of faith, love, kindness, warmth, and a cherisher of life’s every moment, passed away on July 25, 2024 of natural causes with her loving husband of 68 years by her side.
Born on December 4, 1929 to Henry and Jane Tobin in Chicago, Illinois with her siblings Hank and Robert. She attended Lourdes High School and Loyola College. She married Joseph Emmett McGreal on January 28, 1956 at St. Felicitas Catholic Church in Chicago. In 1961 they moved to Penn Hills, Pennsylvania where together they raised eight children, Michael, Joey, Marysue, Patty, Kathleen, Kerry, Annie and Molly, who graced them with 20 grandchildren.
In 2005 they moved to York Township where they spent many a day celebrating numerous events and holidays and attending the sporting events of their grandchildren. Sylvia was an avid reader, word puzzler, artist, poet, shopper, and Pittsburgh sports fan, who never missed a radio broadcast of her beloved Steelers. Her home was filled with seasonal and holiday appropriate decor, photos of her many children and grandchildren, and souvenirs of an incredible 94 years of loving memories. Sylvia, “Mama” as she was known to her family and many friends in her later years, is lovingly remembered by her husband, children, grandchildren, and a community of friends and admirers, who upon being introduced to Mama immediately felt like they were part of her family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, Sylvia’s wish was for any memorial contributions to be made to the charitable institution of your choice.
