Thomas Joseph Kerns, 92, of York, formerly of Maryland, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2018. Born in Cumbola, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (Conroy) Kerns. A graduate of Blythe Township High School, New Philadelphia, Tom had worked as a computer room supervisor for the Social Security Administration for over 33 years. Following his retirement, he worked as a shuttle van driver for R&H Mercedes Benz/Toyota in Owings Mills, Md, for 15 years. A member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in New Freedom, Tom was also a lifetime member of VFW Post 521 and the American Legion Post 122, both of Owings Mills, Md. He proudly served in World War II in the Navy from 1944 to 1946, working aboard the USS Douglas H. Fox-DD779 as a radio operator. Surviving are his sons, Thomas Kerns, and his wife Laurie, and Michael Kerns, and his wife Stephanie, a daughter, Kimberly Miller, and her husband Kevin, and a stepdaughter, Diane Boward; 8 grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew, Jason, and Nicholas Kerns; Samantha Poirier, and her wife, Genevieve Poirier; Troy, Bethany, and Conor Miller; a brother-in-law, John Derr; and 5 nieces and one nephew. Tom was preceded in death by sisters Margaret Kerns, Rose Roth, Ann Derr and Marianne Kerns; son-in-law Richard Boward; and brother-in-law Francis Roth. There will be a viewing from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A funeral Liturgy will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 315 N. Constitution Ave., New Freedom. Interment will follow in the New Freedom Cemetery.
