Virginia L. Smith, 90, passed away Tuesday, November 1, 2022. Born in Railroad, she was the daughter of the late Howard Carroll Thompson Sr. and Mabel E. (Spicer) Thompson. She was the loving wife to the late Medford W. Smith who passed in 1985.

Virginia was very active in the community. She was a member of the New Freedom Lion’s Club, was their secretary for a few years, and she chaired their Annual Flea Market. She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts and belonged to a card club for many years. Often she and her cousin, Shirley, would travel and it would sometimes be a surprise as to where they ended up. As a member of Bentley Springs United Methodist Church in MD, she chaired the Christmas Bazaars. She was also a member of Trinity U.M. Church, New Freedom. Virginia was a leader for the Jezebelles and managed them at the New Freedom Centennial Parade; she also was the former President of the Red Hats of the South Central York County Senior Center. Virginia worked part time at Janson Restaurant and Bart Brown Restaurant in New Freedom; she also was employed at AAI corporation in Hunt Valley, MD, as an engineer’s aid in aircraft armament. She liked to paint and won a prize at the York Fair for her portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt. She liked playing dominoes and would always try to lay extra ones down. She enjoyed playing board games with her family, especially Sequence.

Virginia is survived by a son, Medford L. Smith, and his wife, Mary; a grandson, Jason, and his companion, Dani, and Dani’s children, Caleb and Michelle; a great granddaughter, Elsie C. Smith and her companion, Taylor Bumgarner and their son, Koa Grey; a brother, Jon A. Thompson and his wife Wilma, and sister, Sharon Wolfe and her husband, Terry; a granddog, Porter; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her son Barry W. Smith and her brother, Howard C. Thompson Jr. and sister, Norma J. Thompson McClure.

A viewing will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2022, from 10am to 12pm at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc. of New Freedom, 24. N. 2 nd St., New Freedom, PA 17349. The funeral service will begin at 12pm at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband in the New Freedom Cemetery.
