Wayne Doyle Swartz, 81, of White Hall, MD passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024. Born in Hanover, PA, where he attended a one room elementary school. He went on to be awarded his BA degree from Penn State University and his MSW from the University of Maryland. He was the son to the late Raymond and Virginia (Doyle) Swartz. Wayne was the beloved husband to Michael Cenci, who shared 60 years together.
Wayne began his career at Baltimore City Hospitals (now Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center) in 1972 as the administrator of the Crisis Clinic, a small publicly funded mental health program that provided services to people in immediate need in southeast Baltimore. Under his leadership and vision, over his 35-year tenure, the Crisis Clinic grew and is now the John Hopkins Bayview Community Psychiatry Program, which is among the most comprehensive in the United States.
Wayne enjoyed bedding down his horses on crisp winter nights, and lunches of chicken wings. He loved dressing up for the opera, and especially loved Les Misérables. Christmas Eve dinners with friends was a tradition at Wayne and Michael’s home. He loved his Jack Russell Terriers, along with gardening, especially pink flowers.
In addition to his husband, Michael, Wayne is survived by his sister Sally Senft; and nieces and nephews, Jenifer Meyers, Stephen Senft, Neal Swartz, and Laura Swartz. He is preceded in death by his brother Ronald Swartz, and his parents.
A public visitation will be held Thursday, February 1, 2024, from 6-8pm and Friday, February 2, 2024, from 10-11am at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc. 24 N. 2nd St, New Freedom, PA 17349. A funeral service will be held at 11:30am at Stablers Church 1233 Stablers Church Rd, Parkton, MD 21120. Interment will follow at the adjoining church cemetery.
