William O. Smith, Sr., 88, of New Freedom, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Gilchrist Hospice Center. He was the husband of the late Nellie D. (Flanagan) Smith. There will be a viewing Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 6 pm to 9 pm at Hartenstein Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 24 N. Second Street, New Freedom, PA. A service will begin 10 am Monday, September 11 at the funeral home with Pastor Ray Powers officiating. Interment will follow in Stablers Cemetery, Parkton, MD following the service. Born in Smyth County, Virginia, William was the son of Lemuel O. and Mary Jane (Haga) Smith. He served in the US Army for over 9 years including the Korean War. He then went on to be a Police Officer with the Baltimore County Police Department in 1957 until he retired in 1973 with the rank of Sergeant. He was a lifetime member of the New Freedom VFW Post #7012. After his retirement, he enjoyed farming, raising cattle and spending time with family. Surviving are his children, Frank E. Smith, Sr. and his wife, Donna of Stewartstown, Robert E. Smith, Sr. and his wife, Dee Anna of Stewartstown, Laurie A. Belt and her husband David of White Hall and Cathy S. Warrener and her husband, Edward of Felton; 8 grandchildren, Amy Litsinger, Frank Smith, Jr. (Smitty), Jason Smith, James Smith, Robert Smith, Jr., David Belt, Jr., Brian Belt, and Angie Fosbenner-Yelton; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Stanley Jackson. In addition to his wife, William was preceded in death by a son, William O. Smith, Jr.; a grandson, William Travis Smith; two brothers, Charles and Robert Jackson; and a sister, Elizabeth Wirtz.
